The Bar Behind Seahorse in W Union Square by Rockwell Group

In hospitality design, the bar is more than a functional surface, it’s the focal point. It sets the tone, anchors the space, and becomes the place guests naturally gather. When Rockwell Group approached us for their renovation of the W Union Square hotel in New York City, the vision was clear: create a bar that feels both timeless and tactile, rooted in tradition yet refined for a modern dining experience.

At the heart of this project is a Custom Zinc Bar Top, designed and fabricated to elevate both the aesthetic and performance of the space.

Inspiration: Craft, Materiality, and Atmosphere

In some of the most compelling hospitality interiors, material choice drives experience. At Seahorse in New York, for example, the bar is defined by a cast zinc top paired with warm finishes, creating an inviting and textural centerpiece that immediately grounds the space .

This same philosophy guided the Seahorse.

The goal wasn’t just to install a bar, it was to create a surface that tells a story:

  • One that ages gracefully
  • One that reflects light beautifully
  • One that feels authentic to the environment

Zinc was the natural choice.

Why a Zinc Bar?

Zinc has long been used in European cafés and brasseries, prized for its durability and evolving patina. Unlike stone or sealed surfaces, zinc is alive. It reacts, changes, and develops character over time.

For La Bastille, the zinc bar top delivers:

  1. Timeless Aesthetic
The soft, matte sheen of zinc creates an understated elegance that pairs effortlessly with wood, tile, and ambient lighting.
  2. Living Finish
Over time, the surface develops a natural patina, adding depth and uniqueness that cannot be replicated with manufactured materials.
  3. Hospitality Durability
Zinc is highly resilient for high-traffic environments, making it ideal for bars where performance matters as much as design.

Design + Fabrication Approach

This project required precision from concept to install. Luxury Interior designers and architects trust La Bastille time and time again because of this very reason: our relentless effort to give our clients the best experience possible, our uncompromising nature when it comes to product integrity, quality, and craftsmanship, and obsession over every last detail.

Custom Fabrication
Each section of the zinc bar was fabricated to fit seamlessly within the existing architecture, ensuring clean lines and continuity throughout the space.

Hand-Finished Surface
The bar top was treated to achieve a refined, remove brushed finish, balancing texture with smooth usability.

Integrated Design Details
Edges, seams, and transitions were carefully considered to maintain a cohesive and elevated look from every angle.

The Result: A Bar That Anchors the Dining Experience

The finished zinc bar at La Bastille does exactly what a great bar should do: it draws people in.

It becomes:

  • The first impression upon entering
  • The social hub of the space
  • A tactile experience guests interact with throughout their visit

Who doesn’t love grabbing dinner, happy hour, or a quick cocktail at a beautiful bar?

Like the best hospitality designs, it balances warmth, craftsmanship, and functionality. The zinc surface reflects ambient light, complements surrounding materials, and subtly evolves with use.

Why Zinc Bars Are Having a Moment

Across high-end restaurants and bars, zinc is re-emerging as a material of choice. Not because it’s trendy, but because it’s enduring.

Designers are gravitating toward zinc bar tops for their ability to:

  • Add texture without overpowering a space
  • Age beautifully rather than degrade
  • Create a sense of authenticity and permanence
  • Sustainability that zinc offers

As seen in leading hospitality projects, the zinc bar is no longer just a surface, it’s a statement.

Looking Ahead

For La Bastille, the zinc bar isn’t just a feature, it’s a foundation. It supports the energy of the space, enhances the guest experience, and reinforces the brand’s commitment to quality and detail.

As more spaces move toward material-driven design, zinc will continue to stand out as one of the most compelling choices for bars that are meant to last.
