Care & Protection

Preserving your surface

Polished Countertop

With regular care, you can maintain a like-new surface.

Zinc and pewter are very easy to maintain. Cleaning with a non-abrasive cleanser will keep your La Bastille countertop or furnishing clean and looking good. We recommend that you allow your piece to develop its own organic patina. The use of simple soap and water is perfect to clean all of our decorative metal products.

Zinc or pewter products cannot withstand excessive heat. Use trivets if placing any hot item on your metal countertop. Also, do not use any chlorinated products on your La Bastille design as this will cause damage. Do not use abrasive cleaners or any acidic cleaners or liquids, as this can damage the integrity of the patina permanently.

A note about patina

Natural Patina

Left alone, our metals will develop a natural patina that signifies a well-used, well-loved surface.

Zinc is a reactive metal with a living finish. Its blue-gray tone reflects a country charm and a casual elegance, and it will acquire a patina and change with age and use. This patina will take about a year to fully develop and will continue to evolve throughout the life of the piece.

We can create a patina in our shop prior to installation. This patina finish will be darker than a natural patina and will have a more even surface initially. However, like a natural patina, the patina finish we create is not permanent and will continue to evolve over time.
